Racing

A horse’s ears will tell you what he’s thinking about.  And if you’re doing this, and kicking him and pulling on him, his ears will go back.  He’ll be paying attention to you. If you can be as quiet and still as a mouse, then the horse doesn’t think about you. His ears go forward. He’s paying attention to what’s in front of him. He sees the fence and he jumps it perfectly every time.

~ Joe Davies

Our evolution into steeplechase racing began in 2009 with Mookie Monster, a jumper pony who rebelled against the constraints of the ring.  We began channeling her energy by galloping her with our young training horses, and it became clear that racing was in Mookie’s future.  She began her racing career in 2009 at the DVA races, and soon became the large pony to beat.  In the racing seasons that followed, pony racing at the DVA races began to embrace all the spirit and seriousness of the sport. Mookie Monster was DVA champion for many successive years, with wins including the Brandywine Hills Point to Point, Cheshire Point to Point, Fair Hill Point to Point, Junior Maryland Hunt Cup, Winterthur Point to Point, Pennsylvania Hunt Cup, and Willowdale Point to Point. Mookie is still racing today under trainer Ricky Hendricks and rider Parker Hendriks.  Mookie is now retiring the DVA trophy with her impressive records.

Our thoroughbred mare McCrady’s is an inspiring example of an ex-racehorse truly coming into her own in a new career. McCrady’s transformed from not winning on the track to dominating timber races with her speed, stamina, and heart.  The first timber start for “Cradle” was her win at Brandywine Hills Point to Point.  Her diversity is demonstrated by her wins in sidesaddle; as long as Cradle is racing over timber, she is fulfilled, no matter the discipline.  She was the DVA champion in 2016, 2017, and 2018 for the fox hunters race. In 2018, she was undefeated in the fox hunters race and ladies timber, as well as in side saddle. This year she is retiring the fox hunter perpetual trophy.  McCrady’s will be setting sights on new challenges racing in the 2018 sanctioned timber races.

Chewy is our small racing pony, and also the ultimate “all around pony”, demonstrating his adaptability by seamlessly doing racing one day, and children’s lessons or pony camp the next.  Chewy’s love for racing was immediately apparent, and he quickly became a champion.  In his second race, he beat the previously undefeated Hoof Hearted. Chewy has just gone on to be another legend. In 2017 and 2018, Chewy was small pony champion for the DVA. Chewy excels on the flat or in a field masters chase, and has won at the Brandywine Hills Point to Point, Cheshire Point to Point, Fair Hill Point to Point, Grand National, Junior Maryland Hunt Cup, Winterthur Point to Point, Pennsylvania, and Willowdale Point to Point.

Last but not least, in 2016 we got a new and untested large pony, Baboo, with the hopes that we had another large pony champion in the rough.  Baboo eased into his first season of racing with seconds and thirds, but his second season followed with wins. In 2018 he was the large pony champion for the field master chases. His wins include Brandywine Hills Point to Point, Cheshire Point to Point, Fair Hill Point to Point, Grand National, Junior Maryland Hunt Cup, Winterthur Point to Point, Pennsylvania, and Willowdale Point to Point.
